Hackney’s multi award winning Markets, Shop Fronts and Street Trading Service manage and operate all of the Markets, Shop Front, Pavement and Street Trading activity across the Borough. Our street markets and trading sites reflect the borough’s vibrant & diverse communities and cultures and are integral to the borough's strong economic recovery.

With a wide ranging portfolio that includes an Indoor market operation, 6 large historic and successful markets dating back hundreds of years and over 30 micro markets or street trading sites and a host of other commercial activities and licensable operations across Hackney.

The Markets Service Officers will play a key role in supporting the Senior Markets Service Officers and the Markets and Street Trading Operations Manager to deliver and develop high quality, well-run Markets & Street Trading sites across the borough.You will be responsible for the delivery of a customer centric front line service. Proactively engaging with traders and the public to provide support, advice and interventions to ensure that compliance to licence conditions are effectively maintained. You will be there to drive occupancy of your designated trading pitches, ensure all repairs are reported and undertaken promptly and follow up to ensure they are executed to a high standard and ensure high levels of customer satisfaction is attained.

Day to day activities include carrying out licence inspections, processing and reconciling fee payments and income, managing waiting lists, providing advice and guidance, Selling the opportunities and benefits of street trading to prospective traders, ensuring quality and compliance, and undertaking initial enforcement action against any non compliance or anti-social behaviour.

Please note this role requires working every Saturday and Sundays and some evenings when required.

Your goal is to provide a right first time front line service to all of our Licence holders and ensure the effective licencing and compliance of the boroughs Markets and Street Trading function, so we are searching for individuals with retail expertise, who are proactive in recognising challenges and risks, as well as dealing with customers and complaints. You must have outstanding customer service skills as well as the ability to communicate with a variety of audiences. We are trying to increase our portfolio of Markets and Street Trading as well as save money through efficiencies and cost reductions, therefore you must be eager to bring strategic / service improvement ideas to the table.

Experience of delivering a consultative sales or service process and carrying out detailed inspections and assessments is essential. You will need to be self motivated with effective relationship management, interpersonal and negotiation skills and a strong team ethic to achieve their full potential in order to help make Hackney a better place for our businesses, residents and visitors.
